(Rupert Klingseis)

Fr. Rupert Klingseis (吉世東, 1890–1950) was born on January 5, 1890, in the parish of Maria Hilf in Munich, and was baptized Josef. Raised in an ordinary family, he studied from 1904 at the St. Ludwig minor seminary on the Main, then moved to the gymnasium of St. Ottilien, graduating at the top of his class. Entering St. Ottilien in the autumn of 1910, he made his canonical novitiate and professed first vows on October 8, 1911. He took a doctorate in theology at Sant’Anselmo in Rome and was ordained a priest on July 16, 1915, at the Dillingen seminary by Bishop Maximilian von Lingg of Augsburg; in 1918 he took a doctorate in philosophy at the University of Munich under Professor Bäumker. As the World War had emptied the philosophy college St. Ottilien ran for the congregation’s German priest-monks, he lectured at various other seminaries; after the war he served from 1922 to 1930 as rector of the St. Ottilien philosophy college, lecturing in philosophy, and for five years as subprior. When Fr. Chrysostomus Schmid, professor of philosophy at Tokwon, was elected coadjutor abbot of St. Ottilien in 1930 and returned to Germany, Fr. Rupert was sent to Tokwon in his place, arriving November 9, 1930. For fifteen years he taught philosophy, Latin, and church history at the Tokwon seminary, giving himself to the formation of seminarians and directing many retreats. In 1940 he published, as the first volume of a popular apologetics series, ‘Is the Human Soul Matter or Spirit?’

He was brilliant, with an extraordinary memory. The power supply in those days was poor, and when the lights failed suddenly during the Divine Office and the church went dark, his voice alone carried on, reciting the psalms by heart. Of everyday practical sense, on the other hand, he had none: straw shoes were set out in the seminary as slippers for professors and guests, and not knowing how they were worn, he always wore them backwards. Clumsy as he was at manual work, his sense of community was so strong that he never once missed the common work. At the wheat harvest, when the whole community turned out to the monastery farm, he was always there, drenched in sweat in the late-June heat, never showing reluctance. The brothers, unable to dissuade him, let him work — and quietly sent someone behind him to do his work over again. Those who lived with him at Tokwon called him the very type of the praying and working Benedictine: devoted to prayer, tireless in study, and for all the fame of his learning, humble, self-effacing, and kind to everyone.

The exemplary life of Fr. Rupert, who was determined to practice what he knew, did much to keep the monastery steady and at peace through the hard years. Despite the Soviet occupation and the party’s pressure the seminary carried on, and he with his philosophy lectures. But in the small hours of May 9, 1949, when the security police surrounded the abbey, he was taken to the Pyongyang prison along with Bishop-Abbot Bonifatius Sauer, Prior Lucius Roth, and Subprior Arnulf Schleicher. On August 5, 1949, the German religious taken from Tokwon and Wonsan left for the Oksadok camp; but he and six other brothers, having been convicted, remained in the prison. The charge against him was the authorship of an anti-communist book — the volume he had written in 1940. According to the international mission agency Fides, Fr. Rupert died of malnutrition in the Pyongyang prison on April 6, 1950, and was buried in a cemetery outside Pyongyang together with Bishop-Abbot Bonifatius.
