The stone gate at the entrance of St. Paul's Abbey

A Benedictine Monastery · Since 1924

That in all things God may be glorified

St. Paul's Abbey is an international community of missionary monks living according to the Rule of St. Benedict in the hills of Newton, New Jersey.

Who We Are

One community, three continents

We are an international community of brothers — American, Korean, and Tanzanian — seeking God together under the Rule of St. Benedict as part of the Missionary Benedictine Congregation of St. Ottilien.

Founded in 1924 by monks of St. Ottilien Archabbey, the abbey has spent a century praying, working, and sending missionaries from this hillside in Sussex County to communities across the world.

Ora et Labora

The rhythm of our day

Seven times a day the bell calls the community to prayer. Everything else — work, meals, study, rest — finds its place around it.
