Sister Maria Fructuosa Gerstmayer (1898–1952) was born on February 4, 1898, in Weingarten in the Diocese of Rottenburg, Germany, the fourth daughter of the merchant Max Gerstmayer and his wife Juliana. Her parents were devout Catholics with more than ten children, and she grew up in a warm, peaceful home, formed in the faith — bright of temper and kind of heart. Already at the age of eight she declared her hope of one day bringing the Gospel to children who did not know Christ.
On March 1, 1921, she entered the Missionary Benedictine Sisters of Tutzing and received the name Maria Fructuosa. She was guileless, ever ready to help, and possessed of a beautiful voice. She made her first profession at the Tutzing motherhouse on February 2, 1923, and was sent to the Wonsan convent on September 4, 1926. Soon after arriving she was named head nurse of the ‘Mary, Help of Christians’ dispensary.
Sixty to eighty patients were treated at the dispensary every day. Because Sister Fructuosa cared not only for those who came to her but sought out the sick in the poor quarters of the town, there was scarcely anyone around Wonsan who did not know her name. To dying children and the sick she administered emergency baptism with all her zeal — at least five thousand of them in all.
Having no gift for languages, she spoke little even with her patients, yet she never lost her peaceful smile, and she carried out all her work in trust toward God and in a spirit of prayer. Her Sundays she spent before the Blessed Sacrament, praying for the poor, for unbelievers, and for atheists — yet let word come of a patient in danger and she ran without hesitation or complaint to do all she could. Working in wretched conditions she twice contracted typhus, which damaged her hearing; still she served the poor and the sick quietly for twenty-three years.
After the liberation of 1945 the Soviet army occupied the North and the communists rose to power. Even under the new regime’s harsh controls the sisters of Wonsan continued their mission work to the end. Sister Fructuosa’s work was a thorn in the communists’ eye, but she was so well known in Wonsan that they dared not touch her carelessly. On May 10, 1949, the political security police raided the Wonsan convent and arrested her with eleven other German sisters, sending them to the Pyongyang prison. Held there with the German sisters arrested from the branch houses, she was transferred on August 5 to the Oksadok camp in Chonchon county, Chagang Province.
At the camp she was first assigned to the kitchen. From early morning until evening — eighteen hours — she washed and cut radishes, ground corn at the millstone, and cleaned the wild greens, wild garlic, and mushrooms the prisoners gathered on their way back from work to stretch their rations. She had already suffered dysentery and edema in the Pyongyang prison, and in the camp she never once fully recovered her health. In 1951 a mild stroke brought her the anointing of the sick; she slowly improved, but being unable to do heavy work she was moved to the sewing room. In a blue army uniform, her swollen legs stretched before her, she sewed with an open spectacle case on her knees — inside it a small image of the Sacred Heart. Even there she overworked, mending the brothers’ worn-out clothes late into the night by pine-knot light. Her illness did not relent; when her companions laid her on the floor and prepared her for death, she suffered another stroke and did not regain consciousness. Sister Maria Fructuosa died most peacefully in the night of September 15, 1952, and was buried in the cemetery of the Oksadok camp.
