Fr. Maurus Kim Bong-sik (金鳳植, 1913–1950) was born in 1913 at Taepyong village, Palji, near Hunchun in North Kando (today part of Hunchun, China), and was baptized Hieronymus. His father served as a lay catechist, helping the missionaries knit the Catholic community together; his devout and tireless mother labored day and night to care for a large household. He was frail — delicate like his brothers and sisters who died young — not brilliant, but faithful and diligent. In September 1927 he entered the Tokwon seminary. His sister Anna Kim, two years his elder, entered the Wonsan convent of the Missionary Benedictine Sisters of Tutzing, received the name Josepha, and made her first profession on May 26, 1932, but died at the convent on June 18, 1938. Sister Placida Kim Bong-ok, who made her first profession at the Holy Cross convent in Yenki on May 18, 1944, was his younger sister.

After finishing the secondary course and studying philosophy and theology at Tokwon, he began his novitiate at Yenki Priory on March 23, 1938, together with Fr. John Mary Vianney Choi Yong-ho (崔永浩, 1908–1998), under the novice master Prior Viktorinus Zeileis (徐相烈, 1888–1957). He made his first profession on March 26, 1939, and was ordained a priest in the priory church of Yenki on April 5, 1942, by Bishop-Abbot Theodor Breher. After ordination he went out to parish work as assistant at Paltogu. In 1944 the Manchukuo government nationalized all private schools, the elementary schools founded by the Benedictine missionaries in each parish not excepted; after this measure he moved to his home parish of Hunchun as assistant.

In the summer of 1945 Fr. Maurus greeted the liberation at the Tumen parish. The German missionaries were then suffering under the harsh rule of the Soviet army in Manchuria. He traveled among Paltogu, Hunchun, and the other stations, filling the missionaries’ places, and after the Soviet withdrawal was for a time placed under arrest by the ascendant Chinese communists. On May 20, 1946, Yenki Priory was closed and the German missionaries interned at the Nanping camp. Fr. Maurus, who had escaped arrest, kept the Tumen parish alone until 1947, when he crossed the Tumen River to Tokwon Abbey together with the Korean sisters of the Yenki convent. There he temporarily took charge of the Kosan parish in place of Fr. Kunibert Ott (吳炳世, 1912–1952), who was ill, and afterward made the rounds of several parishes. Meanwhile a great flight to the South was under way. Tokwon Abbey worked to strengthen the remaining faithful against the communist ideology, holding lay retreats in as many parishes as possible; Fr. Maurus served as a speaker — until the Party, realizing the Church stood in its way, disrupted the talks and the retreats had to cease.

From January 20, 1949, Fr. Maurus served as temporary pastor of the Ichon parish in Kangwon Province, under the Prefecture of Chunchon. Even in those hard circumstances he did more than merely carry his assigned load: he asked the Wonsan convent to open a branch house at Ichon. Sister Lucia Park Pin-suk (朴彬淑, 1919–1950) and Sister Juliana Che Sam-rye (諸三禮, 1920–2010) were sent to Ichon, and Sister Lioba Choi Sin-jong (崔信貞, 1908–?) was designated superior once the house should be formally erected in May. But on May 11, 1949, the Wonsan convent itself was closed and the foundation came to nothing. The same day Tokwon Abbey was closed, and all the German missionaries and Korean clergy were arrested and taken to Pyongyang. Living far from the abbey in his parish, he was missed from the arrest lists — until June 24, 1950, when he was arrested and imprisoned in the Wonsan prison.

On October 9, 1950, on the eve of their retreat, the North Korean army executed four hundred prisoners; among them were Fr. Maurus Kim and Fr. Timotheus Lee Kwang-jae (李光在, 1909–1950), pastor of Yangyang in the Prefecture of Chunchon. Their bodies were found in an air-raid shelter on the hill behind the prison. Guided by the testimony of the Protestant minister Han Chun-myong, who had barely escaped the massacre, the faithful of the Wonsan parish searched out the two priests’ bodies: Fr. Maurus was known by the clothes he wore, Fr. Timotheus by a finger injured in childhood. On October 22, 1950, the American army chaplain Fr. John Patrick Murphy (1905–1981) and Fr. Patrick O’Connor of the Columban Fathers celebrated the funeral Mass, and he was laid to rest in the parish cemetery on the hill behind the Wonsan church.
