Fr. Petrus Lee Chae-chol (李載喆, 1912–1950?) was born in Seoul on May 12, 1912. A graduate of the Tokwon seminary, he was ordained a priest together with Fr. Gabriel Ku Tae-jun on March 25, 1940, in the abbey church of Tokwon, by Bishop-Abbot Bonifatius Sauer. When Fr. Marcus Pang In-gon, pastor of the Chongjin parish, died of illness in September 1945, Fr. Petrus succeeded him as its second pastor.

When the priests at Tokwon Abbey were arrested on May 11, 1949, he escaped arrest, and until the outbreak of the Korean War he secretly cared for the faithful across Hamgyong Province — Chongjin, Hoeryong, Unggi, Nanam, and Songjin. He and his catechist were under a travel ban: if he went even a few miles to administer the sacraments, security agents followed him. He kept up his rounds desperately, celebrating the sacraments, and was once detained for a week at the Huam-dong security office.

The circumstances of his arrest and martyrdom are these. He was arrested at the Chongjin parish about 2:30 a.m. on June 25, 1950; present with him was the seminarian Aloysius Chong Hwan-guk, later a priest of the Diocese of Busan (ordained March 19, 1956). Sister Rosa Kim testified that on her way to the water tap of the Wonsan prison, where the Korean sisters of the dissolved Wonsan convent were held after May 11, 1949, she met a greatly emaciated Fr. Petrus Lee. He passed her a small note that read: “The priests of the Tokwon territory are here in this prison.” In early October 1950, when some eighty religious believers were shot at the lighthouse of Chongjin harbor, he was martyred among them; his body was cast into the sea and could not be recovered. This is the testimony of Maria Kim, then woman catechist of the Chongjin parish.

이재철 베드로 신부는 1912년 5월 12일에 서울에서 태어났다. 그는 덕원 신학교를 졸업하였고, 1940년 3월 25일 덕원 수도원 성당에서 신 보니파시오 주교 아빠스의 주례로 구대준 가브리엘과 함께 사제로 서품되었다. 1945년 9월에 청진 본당 주임인 방인건 마르코 신부가 병사하자, 이재철 베드로 신부는 청진 본당 제2대 주임으로 부임하였다. 1949년 5월 11일 덕원 수도원에 있던 신부들이 체포될 때, 그는 체포를 면하였다. 그래서 6․25전쟁 이전까지 비밀리에 함경도(청진, 회령, 웅기, 나남, 성진) 교우들을 돌보았다. 당시 그와 전교회장에겐 금족명(禁足命)이 내려져서 성사를 주려고 30리만 외출해도 내무서원이 미행하였다. 그는 필사적으로 순회를 하여 성사를 집전하다가 후암동 내무서에서 일주간 구류를 당하기도 하였다.

이재철 베드로 신부의 체포 및 순교 상황은 다음과 같다. 그는 1950년 6월 25일 오전 2시 30분경 청진 본당에서 체포되었다. 그 자리에는 당시 신학생이던 정환국 알로이시오(부산 교구, 1956. 3. 19 서품) 신부가 함께 있었다. 김 로사 수녀의 증언에 따르면, 1949년 5월 11일 새벽에 해산된 원산 수녀원의 한국인 수녀들이 감금되어 있던 원산 인민교화소 수돗가로 가는 중에 매우 여윈 이재철 신부를 만났다고 한다. 그는 김 로사 수녀에게 작은 쪽지를 전해 주었는데, 거기에는 “덕원 면속구 여러 신부님들이 이 교화소에 계신다”라고 적혀 있었다. 1950년 10월 초순경에 청진항만 등대에서 80여명의 종교인들이 총살되었을 때, 그도 함께 순교했고 시신은 바다에 던져져서 수습될 수 없었다. 이 사실은 당시 청진 본당의 여전교회장 김 마리아의 증언이다.
