Sister Lucia (Angela) Park Pin-suk was born on October 14, 1919, at Sunan in northern Korea, the eldest of three children. From childhood Angela nurtured a firm and active faith and learned to help the poor and the suffering with deep compassion. When her aunt, Sister Columba Park of the Wonsan convent, received the habit at Wonsan, Angela attended the ceremony, was deeply moved, and resolved then and there to enter the community.

As a postulant Angela passed the examination to become a music teacher. She was intelligent, energetic, and knew how to bear hardship. During her novitiate, when she was downcast at having to wait longer for permission to make vows, Sister Columba told her: “What matters is not who professes first, but who wins the greater crown of martyrdom. So you must wait in patience.” Sister Lucia made her first profession on June 22, 1943.

Throughout the Second World War, from 1939 to 1945, the Wonsan convent was in practice cut off from the Missionary Benedictine Sisters of Tutzing. In 1945 the Soviet army entered the North; they restricted the missionaries’ freedom but did not persecute them. Secretly, however, the Soviets prepared the Korean communists to seize power at the opening of 1949 — and then the persecution began.

On the night of May 10, 1949, the political security police descended on the Wonsan convent and confiscated it. The German sisters were imprisoned for months in Pyongyang and then taken to the Oksadok forced labor camp in the northern mountains, where they suffered until their release in 1954. The nineteen Korean sisters were confined in the Wonsan ‘rehabilitation center,’ denounced as idle and useless citizens and pressed to marry. A week later they were sent back to the convent, but had to put on secular dress and return each to her own family. Among themselves the sisters said, “It is not the convent building or the habit that makes a religious, but the heart and spirit,” and every one of them resolved to live her Missionary Benedictine vocation faithfully.

With Sister Oliva, also a relative of Sister Columba Park, Sister Lucia returned from Wonsan through Pyongyang to her home town of Sunan. Fearlessly she gathered children in the communists’ own meeting room and taught them catechism three times a week — and hymns besides. Some of her relatives were party members, and they found this most displeasing; yet until the war broke out in June 1950 Sister Lucia felt no great difficulty living her vocation.

In 1948 Sister Columba Park had been named subprioress of Wonsan by Prioress General Gertrud Link, and when the German sisters were imprisoned in 1949 she carried responsibility for the Korean sisters — a heavy charge. In February 1950 she had a chance to flee to the South. She told Sisters Lucia and Oliva to follow her at the next opportunity, yet feared that if her own flight were discovered the two sisters would suffer for it.

Sister Oliva, for her part, was hard of hearing, and Sister Lucia judged that if they were arrested while crossing the border and separated, grave trouble could follow: under interrogation Sister Oliva might make statements that would ruin the other sisters’ chances of escape. So Sister Lucia and Sister Oliva remained in the North while most of the others fled south.

Sunan was a quiet town. One of Sister Lucia’s cousins, who had once been a servant in her family’s house, had risen high in the party. He reported her to the authorities, and on September 24, 1950, she was arrested.

In the autumn of 1950 the ROK army advanced northward. As it neared Sunan, the communist troops drove all their prisoners into the hills and shot them. The date is uncertain — October 5, or the 11th or 12th. Sister Lucia Park was among the prisoners executed. She was faithful to our Lord Jesus Christ and kept the noble spirit of a religious; she did the will of God, and was faithful to it even to the offering of her life at thirty-one.
