Fr. Gregor (Ludwig Karl Friedrich) Sorger was born on November 19, 1906, at Spaichingen (Tuttlingen district) in the Diocese of Rottenburg-Stuttgart, the son of Dr. Leopold Sorger and Paula Haller.
He attended primary school at Ehingen and the gymnasiums of Ehingen, Ulm, and Rottweil, then studied law for five semesters at Tübingen before entering the Benedictine archabbey of Beuron at the end of 1927. He made his first profession there on June 29, 1929, studied philosophy at Maria Laach and theology at Beuron, made his perpetual vows on June 29, 1932, and was ordained a priest on August 5, 1934.
In 1937 Fr. Gregor was sent to Tonogaoka in Japan to help found a new monastery of the Beuronese Congregation. When that foundation failed, he moved in 1940 to Tokwon Abbey, where he taught German, English, and music at the seminary, served as secretary to Bishop-Abbot Bonifatius Sauer, and was organist of the abbey church.
When the abbey was closed, Fr. Gregor was imprisoned in Pyongyang with the other German brothers and transferred to the Oksadok camp. He died of malnutrition and frostbite on November 15, 1950, during the evacuation to Manpo.
Testimony of Sister Diomedes Meffert, physician in the camp: “Fr. Gregor Sorger came from Japan to Korea in 1940 and worked in our abbey from then on. Prison ruined his health: he arrived at the camp wasted by continual dysentery and never truly regained his strength. Contemplative and quiet by nature, pious as a child, he spoke little of his own sufferings. None of his camp companions ever forgot how, on the long walks to the fields and pastures, he always carried the rosary in his hand — he prayed it beyond counting. The terrible march to Manpo, which he had to make on foot, drained him utterly. In the prison there, when the air-raid alarms sounded, even reaching the passage in the yard was almost beyond him. The terror of the incendiary attacks, and then the way of the cross to the prisoners’ makeshift quarters in a nearby valley, consumed the last of his strength. The trench in which we were held was a bitterly cold room, crudely roofed over on open ground. Food in those days was nothing but an occasional boiled ear of corn. Fr. Gregor could not endure the hardships of that time, and died — literally starved and frozen. It was November 15. There was not even a side room where his body could lie in quiet: he lay in the passage of our trench, and everyone had to pass brushing against his body. Unspeakably poor he lay there — and yet he was smiling.”

그레고르 조르거 신부는 1940년 일본에서 한국으로 와 그때부터 우리 수도원에서 활동했다. 그의 건강은 감옥에서 매우 나빠졌다. 그는 계속적인 설사로 무척 야위어서 수용소로 왔으며, 한 번도 제대로 기운을 차리지 못했다. 천성이 명상적이고 조용하며 어린이같이 경건한 그는, 자신의 고통에 대해 별로 이야기하지 않았다. 수용소 동료들은 모두 그가 들과 목장으로 가는 먼 길에서 항상 손에 묵주를 들고 있었던 것을 잊지 않았다. 그는 무수하게 묵주기도를 바쳤다. 그가 걸어서 가야 했던 만포로의 험난했던 피난은 그를 매우 허약하게 했다. 그곳 감옥에서 공습경보가 울릴 때 마당에 있는 통로까지 가는 것도 너무나 힘이 들었다. 소이탄 공격에 따른 공포와 그에 이어 가까운 계곡에 임시로 건설한 포로들의 거주지로 가는 십자가의 길이 그의 마지막 남은 기운을 고갈시켰다. 우리가 수감된 참호는 탁 트인 대지 위에 조야하게 지붕이 덮인 매우 추운 방이었다. 당시에 먹을 것이라고는 가끔 삶은 옥수수 외에는 아무것도 없었다. 그리하여 그레고르 신부는 이 시기의 고난을 견뎌내지 못하고 결국 운명했다. 글자 그대로 굶주림과 추위에 시달려 얼어 죽은 것이다. 그때가 11월 15일이었다. 그의 시신이 조용히 누워 있을 수 있는 옆방조차도 없었다. 그는 실제로 우리 참호 안의 통로에 눕혀져 있었고, 모든 사람이 그의 시신에 몸이 닿는 상태로 지나다녀야 했다. 말할 수 없을 정도로 초라하게 그는 그곳에 누워 있었지만 미소를 짓고 있었다.
