2017 Christmas Letter

Christmas 2017

Dear Friends of St. Paul’s Abbey,

As we give thanks for your kindness and help which you gave us throughout the year of 2017 and ask the blessings of Jesus Christ for you, we greet you from St. Paul’s Abbey. We hope you had a blessed Christmas and a hopeful New Year of 2018. I would like to tell you about our lives at St. Paul’s Abbey, giving thanks for God’s grace and mercy.

50th Anniversary of profession: Our American brothers, Abbot Joel, Abbot Justin and Br. Luke renewed their vows at the 50th Anniversary of profession on Saturday, September 9. Around 11 priests and 120 guests attended the ceremony. Among them were Fr. Bede, former monk of Newton who transferred to St. Martin’s Abbey in WA, Fr. Damian Milliken who works in Tanzania as a missionary and Fr. Adam of Münsterschwarzach. Abbot Elias, the President of American Cassinese Congregation, presided at the ceremony. When Abbot Elias was a college student, Abbot Joel was his teacher. After the mass, we shared gladness and gratitude at a luncheon with the guests. Ten Tanzaznian sisters from Assumption College sang the traditional Tanzanian songs of joy for the Anniversary.

Guests: Abbot Blasio came here on June 27 and the next day, he went to Washington DC to attend a meeting with South Korean President Jae In Mun at Jangjin Reservoir Battle Monument, National Museum of the Marine Corps. He was invited in honor of the humanitarian act of Br. Marinus at the Hungnam Evacuation during the Korean War. After returning from Washington D.C., he stayed with us until July 4. While Abbot Blasio was here, Abbot Primate emeritus Notker Wolf also visited us from July 3 to July 4. They planted two lilac trees in front of the stature of Jesus at the Abbey cemetery in honor of Br. Marinus on July 3. Abbot President Jeremias visited us on September 25. He looked around our newly renovated retreat house and boiler system. The next day, he presided at mass for us and then left Newton. Many other guests visited us as well.

Brothers: On June 7, Br. Bernardo Ji was assigned to Newton. He took vows on January 14, 2008 and worked in the business office at Waegwan Abbey. Now he is in charge of the kitchen and studies English. Br. John Baptist Tem Tem returned to Agbang Abbey in Togo. He came here on May 17, 2016 and worked at the Christmas tree farm. Br. Barnabas Song, our Abbey building maintenance man, went to St. Martin’s Abbey in Washington State to experience American monastic life and learn English from August 28 to November 17. He had a good time with American monks in a different atmosphere. He shared his experience with our brothers showing many photos of St. Martin’s Abbey and its brothers. I visited St. Benedict’s Priory in El Rosal, Colombia to attend the Superiors’ meeting of the American Region of our congregation from July 19 to 24. There are 5 small monasteries in North and South America which belong to St. Ottilien congregation: El Rosal, Gugue, Newton, Cuba and Schuyler. We talked about where we may go in the future and shared some information. El Rosal monastery is about 40 minutes distant by car from Bogota. Around 12 monks live there working in the retreat house, carpentry shop and farm. It was my first time in Colombia. I did not know that the Bogota area is so cool, even chilly, because of very high altitude at an average of 2,640 meters (8,660 ft) above sea level. Although I can’t speak Spanish, I could talk with some people by using both the smart-phone and body language. On the evening of Monday, September 18, Br. Matthias Yoo and I attended a meeting in Manhattan of Korean American Community leaders in honor of the visit by South Korean President Jae In Mun. I showed some pictures of Br. Marinus and Newton Monastery, briefly explaining about our community. Mr. President Mun and the First Lady told me that they want to plant 2 trees in front of our chapel in honor of Br. Marinus’ humanitarian act. The planting has been planned for May, 2018 by their representatives because they won’t have time to visit our monastery themselves.

Christmas Tree: Thanks to the help of many volunteers and good weather, we successfully sold even more Christmas trees than last year. We really appreciate the many volunteers for their good work and help. We also are thankful for the Don Bosco Knights of Columbus and the Columbiettes who made Christmas wreaths for us.

Dear Friends, in 2017, many guests visited our community in thanks for Br. Marinus. They want us to make plans to build some memorials for Br. Marinus. We also would like to do something in honor of Br. Marinus. But we still have some difficulties, especially leasing the school building. We are waiting and looking for a new tenant for the school. It is not easy to find a new tenant. Until then, we have to submit to financial difficulties. I ask you to pray for our community to solve this problem by God’s grace. We wish you a blessed Christmas and a hopeful New Year in 2018. May God bless you and your loved ones.

III.

Easter Newsletter-2016

Easter 2017

Dear friends of St. Paul’s Abbey,

Happy Easter ! Every year, we celebrate the joy of the resurrection of Jesus, our Lord and Savior. Especially this year, we wish the abundant grace of Easter to overflow in you so that you can bear lots of fruit in this blessed Easter season. Wishing the love of the Risen Lord always to remain in you and your beloved ones, I give you our brief monastery news.

Perpetual Profession and Admission of Oblates : Br. Joseph Duck-Hyun Kim made his final profession during the Sunday Mass on January 29 presided by Abbot Blasio Park. Br. Joseph received St. Marinus as a monastic name when he began his novitiate on January 25, 2010. However, he received his baptism name, Joseph, as his monastic name when he was taking his final vows. The rite of admission of oblates was also carried out at the same time as final vows. More than 100 guests joined the celebration and shared the joy of profession and oblation. Now 23 oblate members have a meeting once a month and learn the spirit of the Benedictine monastic way of life.

The Way of Prayer :  We built up the way of prayer after planting around 110 cherry trees behind the monastery building. The way goes from the vegetable garden to the Abbey cemetery. The length is about 350 yards. We will also build up the way of the cross alongside the way of prayer. We have the way of the cross in the woods next to the monastery building toward the Abbey cemetery. But it is difficult and dangerous for the people to pray there because there are lots of bugs and insects, and even some bears occasionally.

Guests:  Abbot Blasio visited our community with Fr. Isaac Koh, a mission procurator of Waegwan Abbey, from January 24 to 31. He presided at the final profession and oblation on January 29 and had meetings with our brothers and some of our benefactors. We set aside time to seriously consider our monastic way of life and mission work in our present condition. We also talked about how to develop our buildings and master plan, etc. Abbot Emeritus Justin returned to Namibia on March 21. He came here in February, 2016 to be treated for his health problems. He presided at the Solemnity Mass of our Holy Father Benedict. He gave thanks to God for returning to his mission place with good health, and also for the hospitality of the Newton community. He will visit us again in September to celebrate his 50th Anniversary of Monastic vows with Abbot Emeritus Joel and Br. Luke on September 10.

Our brothers:  In January, Abbot Joel, who celebrated his 70th birthday on New Year’s Day, went to Christ the King Priory in Schuyler, NE to serve as prior for 3 years. Br. Subprior Matthias Yoo had a good experience in Prince of Peace Priory in Tigoni, Kenya attending the “Mission Exposure” program from February 1 to 28. This program gives young brothers in Europe and Asia a chance to get a firsthand experience of the kind of mission work our Ottilien Congregation is engaged in. As superior of St. Paul’s Abbey, I attended Abbot’s and Prior’s Workshop at Prince of Peace Abbey in Oceanside, CA from February 17 to 23. Abbot Joel also attended the meeting as superior of Christ the King Priory in Schuyler. While I was there, I asked some of the American Abbots if they could arrange for our brothers to experience the American monastic way of life and study English in their monasteries for a couple of months. Without hesitation, they accepted my request. Actually, Abbot Blasio and I talked about what is the most effective way to learn English for our brothers since we usually speak Korean more than English in our community. I would like to send our brothers to American monasteries to learn English and experience staying in them one by one if they want to.

Dear beloved friends, as always we are thankful for your kindness and good friendship at St. Paul’s Abbey. I also humbly ask you to continue to help and pray for our community so that we can be deeply rooted in this area as a faithful Benedictine monks. May the Risen Lord give you and your loved ones his abundant grace and peace. Thank you.

2016 Christmas Newletter

Christmas 2016

Dear Friend of St. Paul’s Abbey,

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! Greetings and the abundant blessings of our Lord to all of you during this Christmas season. We thank you for your kindness and help which you gave us throughout the year 2016. We pray that God will give you and your loved ones his abundant grace in the year 2017. Asking our Lord Jesus Christ for his love and grace, I would like to share with you our community news for the year 2016.

Various events and plans: During the summer, thanks to the aid of Münsterschwarzach Abbey and Schuyler, we installed new roofing on several more areas of the abbey building and put an additional four small bathrooms in the retreat house. In November, we also built a shed next to the boiler room to store the generator permanently. The purpose of this generator is to provide water to the monastery and school buildings when we loose electric power due to hurricane, heavy snow or unexpected accidents. The next step is to renovate our monastery chapel. On September 13, some of Koreans planted around 60 lilac bushes near the cemetery and gift shop in memory of Br. Marinus who saved 14,000 refugees during the Korean War. Actually, many Koreans want to do something in honor of Br. Marinus’ humanitarian acts. I will make plans to accomplish this step-by-step. Our junior monk Br. Marinus Kim will make his solemn profession on Sunday January 29, 2017 at Mass at 11:00am. Abbot Blasio will come here to preside at the ceremony.

Guests: Many guests visited us. Among them, Abbot Blasio Park visited us before attending the General Chapter Meeting at St. Ottilien in Germany from September 22 to 29. While he was here, he joined our community outing to Minnewaska State Park in New York. Mr. Jin Su Joseph Kim, who is a seminarian of Taejeon diocese came here for the experience of monastic life from October 1 to December 31. While he was here, he prayed and worked with us like one of our brothers. On August 2, our local bishop, Arthur Serratelli visited us and celebrated mass with us at 11:00am. His previous visit was almost 10 years ago when Fr. Bosco was the prior of our community. I had invited him several times but his schedule and ours were not compatible. After the Mass, we had lunch with guests in the retreat house dining room. He visited my garden because he likes gardening. I am happy to say that he was very impressed by my garden. Before returning to his residence in Paterson, he gave us words of encouragement as we live our lives in the monastery and wished us to be prosperous in this area. On December 1, one of Waegwan’s Benedictine oblates, Mr. Matthew Kim, came here for his monastic experience and will stay with us for 3 months until Feb. 28, 2017. In spite of his old age of 75, he has quickly adjusted to our community life. At the Christmas tree sale time, he dressed up as Santa Claus which the customers really enjoyed.

Brothers: We have a new face. On May 17, Br. John Baptist Tem Tem, a monk of Agbang Abbey in Togo, came here as a missionary. He lived at Waegwan Abbey and St. Joseph Priory for one and a half years so he can speak Korean. Now he works in the Christmas tree farm and studies English at the Community College. Abbot Joel travelled to many countries to help other communities in our congregation. When Abbot Blasio visited us in September, he announced that Abbot Joel would go to Christ the King Priory in Schuyler, NE where he was asked to serve as prior for 3 years to replace the former prior, Fr. Maurtitius Wilde, who was appointed prior of St. Anselmo. We were surprised at the news. Abbot Joel helped us with many things, especially liturgy and U.S. citizenship and immigration services. He is scheduled to go to Schuyler on January 9, 2017. Our Brothers Mario, Bernardo and Marinus went to Korea for their home vacations. I went to Germany to attend the General Chapter with Abbot Blasio on September 29 and returned home on October 23 after visiting Frs. Poeman Kang and Elias Lee who study at St. Anselmo in Rome. Thanks to your prayers, our other brothers are also doing well with prayer and work following the teaching of St. Benedict.

Christmas tree sale: Thanks to many volunteers and friends among our American neighbors and several Korean communities, we could manage our annual Christmas tree sale. We hope that with the fresh tree scent, God’s grace and blessings will be delivered to the homes of all those who bought our trees. We really appreciate the many volunteers for their good work and help. We also are thankful for the Don Bosco Knights of Columbus and the Columbiettes who made Christmas wreaths for us.

Dear friends and benefactors, Thanks to your generous help, we can keep up with our monastic way of life in this area. We pray that our Lord will recompense you with his abundant grace. We also wish you a blessed Christmas and a hopeful New Year of 2017. May the infant Jesus Christ bring his love, peace and happiness to your family. Thank you.
