From the greenhouse of our more than 20 acre nursery comes a variety of plants and shrubbery, which are grown and tended by the Brothers themselves.

One of the Monks makes a meditation along the shore of beautiful Lake St. Maur on the Abbey grounds. This is also the site of Camp St. Benedict and the Abbey picnic grounds.

Brother Michael Sok-cheol Yi

13 December 1914 – 26 May 2018

Brother Michael, the eldest member of Waegwan Abbey, died peacefully in our infirmary on 26 May at 11:20 p.m. He was 104 year old and in the 77th year of his vows.

Brother Michael was born in Seoul on 13 December 1914 as the second of five children. His father was Petro Deok-sam Yi and his mother was Magdalena Seong-nyeo Chang. His family has been Christian for generations. In baptism he received the name Antonio. After graduating from elementary school he went to Dong-seong Trade School which was run by a Catholic foundation.
After reading the stories of saints in Kyeong Hyang Magazine he decided to enter a monastery.

Coming from Baek-dong Parish in Seoul he entered Tokwon Abbey on 10 June 1936. When starting his novitiate he received the name Michael. On 18 May 1941 he made his first vows. Even though it was a dark period in history which was defined by the Japanese occupation of Korea and the Second World War Brother Michael did not give up his search for God and continued his
life as a Benedictine monk while working as a book binder in the printing press, then in the sacristy, the farm and the reception of the abbey. On 20 May 1944 he made his final vows. Thereafter communist rule was established in North Korea which led to the forceful closure of Tokwon Abbey and dissolution of the community. So Brother Michael fled to South Korea. At the time the Korean War was raging. Brother Michael lived as a refugee in Busan and Daegu. Also under these circumstances he considered his life a continuation of his monastic life. He handled his hardships with strength and worked for the Church with fervor. Whatever the circumstances were Brother Michael faced them for the sake of God and considered them a part of his religious life.

The monks which had been expelled from Tokwon and Yeongil came together in Waegwan in 1952 to start again a life as a Benedictine community. During the following years he served the community as farmer in Naksan, receptionist, educator for the candidates and postulants, vegetable gardener in the abbey and through other works. From 1987 to 1992 he served as director of the old people’s home in Sonsan and from 1992 tol 1994 as director of St. Benedict Old People’s Village in Kumnam. After that he retired, returned to the abbey and devoted himself fully to religious life. Even after he became 100 years old he continued to do so. As the eldest in the community he was a model for each of us.

Brother Michael lived a life of trust in God. He also hoped that all the members of the community would lead their religious life with great fervor and live as saints. When he greeted and congratulated someone on a special occasion like New Year or other feast days he would say to them: “Become a saint!” Through his prayers he supported all of us.

Towards the end of the year 2017 his health started to decline rapidly. It became difficult for him to see and to hear. He started to suffer. Recently he fell down to the floor while being in his room at night and hurt his thigh. He was operated but was confined to his bed after that. When he received the sacrament of the sick he started to sing the ‘Suscipe’ together with the people at his bedside. It was a moving expression of his lifelong trust in the Lord.

Brother Michael was not only the eldest member of our community but of all priests and members of religious orders in Korea. We are full of admiration for his life which eradiated the fragrance of Christ.

The funeral mass for Brother Michael will be at our abbey church on 28 May 2018 at 2 p.m. Afterwards he will be buried at our cemetery near Waegwan.

Lord, give eternal peace to our Brother Michael and let your eternal light shine upon him!

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!              

우리를 죄와 죽음에서 구원하시고 하느님 아버지의 크신 사랑을 보여 주시기 위해 우리에게 오신 주 예수 그리스도의 성탄의 은총과 자비와 사랑이 2017년 한해도 아낌없는 사랑과 관심을 보여주신 모든 분들께 가득 깃들기를 바라며 기도합니다. 한해를 뒤돌아보면 좋은 일도 있었고 힘든 일들도 있었지만, 주님께서 늘 함께 하시고 은총으로 이끌어 주셨음을 알고 있기에 감사드리고 또 희망을 가질 수 있습니다. 2018년 새해에도 주님 사랑과 은총 안에서 복된 삶이되길 바라며 2017년 한해를 되돌아보도록 하겠습니다.

종신서원과 봉헌회: 지난 2011년 이 한샘 베르나르도 수사가 종신 서원을 한 후 6년 만에 김 덕현 요셉 수사가 1월 29일 오전 11시 미사에서 박 현동 블라시오 아빠스의 주례로 종신서원을 하였습니다. 수도 성소가 귀한 미국 땅이지만 앞으로도 입회자와 서원자가 계속해서 생길 수 있기를 희망하며 여러분의 관심과 기도를 부탁드립니다. 한편 이날 뉴튼 수도원 봉헌회 입회식도 함께 있었는데, 매월 셋째 주일에 모임을 가지고 베네딕도회 수도생활을 배우며 그 가르침과 정신에 따라 충실히 생활하고 있습니다. 23명으로 시작한 봉헌회원은 개인 사정으로 인해 현재 22명이 내년 2월 4일에 있을 수련식을 준비하고 있으며, 2018년부터는 매월 첫째 주에 모임을 가질 계획입니다.

기도길 조성: 4월 중순에 수도원 뒤편 채소밭에서부터 묘지까지 약 350미터 정도 되는 거리에 두 줄로 106그루의 벚나무를 심어 기도 길을 만들었으며, 가을 무렵에는 묘지 앞을 막고 있는 나무들을 깨끗이 정리했으며, 내년 봄에는 더 많은 나무를 심을 계획입니다. 는데, 봄에 심은 나무는 1년 뒤에는 거의 두 배 가까이 크게 자라 꽃을 피운다고 합니다. 수도원을 찾아오시는 분들이 아름다운 꽃길을 걸으며 기도할 수 있기를 기대하고 있습니다.

수도서원 50주년: 9월 9일 11시 미사에서 우리 뉴튼 공동체의 미국인 형제 죠엘 아빠스, 저스틴 아빠스 그리고 루가 수사가 수도서원 50주년 서원 갱신과 축하식을 가졌습니다. 루가 수사는 뉴튼 수도원에서 재정을 맡고 있으며, 죠엘 아빠스는 네브라스카 주 스카일러 수도원에서 그리고 저스틴 아빠스는 남미비아에 있는 베네딕도회 수녀원에서 지도 신부로 생활하고 있습니다.

왜관 수도원 소식: 12월 13일 우리 오딜리아 연합회의 수호자 성녀 오딜리아 축일에 왜관 본원에서 최 정규 요엘 부제와 김 태욱 마리아 클라렛 수사가 왜관 수도원 대성전에서 사제와 부제로 서품되었습니다.

성탄 트리 판매: 여러분의 기도와 많은 봉사자들의 수고덕분에 올해는 예년에 비해 좀 더 많은 트리를 판매할 수 있었습니다. 봉사해 주신 맨하튼 청년회, 봉헌회원들, 레지오 단원들 그리고 여러 본당에서 개인적으로 와서 도와주신 형제자매님들께 진심으로 감사드립니다. 아울러 핫쵸코 판매와 간식을 준비해 주신 자매님들께도 감사드립니다. 성탄 나무를 구입한 모든 이들의 가정에 신선한 나무 향기와 함께 주님의 은총이 가득 전해지길 기원하며, 아울러 트리 봉사를 위해 수고해 주신 모든 분들께 주님 성탄의 큰 은총이 넘치도록 내리길 바라며 기도합니다.

친애하는 형제 자매 여러분! 올해는 우리 수도원이 한국 전쟁 당시 흥남 부두에서 1,4000명을 구한 마리누스 수사님 덕분에 동포 사회에 많이 알려지고 또 많은 손님들이 다녀갔습니다. 신자들 뿐 아니라 많은 동포들이 관심을 가지고 이 수도원이 미국 사회 안에서 발전해 나가기를 응원하는 가운데, 내년 5월 경에는 마리누스 수님의 업적을 기리며 문 재인 대통령과 영부인의 이름으로 성당 앞에 구상 나무를 기념식수 할 계획입니다. 또한 여건이 허락하는 데로 마리누스 수사님을 위한 기념관도 건립할 생각인데, 여러 가지 어려움을 안고 있는 것이 안타까운 현실입니다. 실례로 수도원 옆 학교 건물의 임대가 만료되어 새로운 임대인을 찾고 있는데 쉽지가 않습니다. 수도원의 큰 수입원 중의 하나여서 임대가 될 때까지 경제적인 어려움을 감수해야만 합니다. 주님의 큰 은총으로 이 문제가 잘 해결되기를 희망하며 여러분의 기도를 부탁드립니다. 다시 한 번 우리 뉴튼 수도원을 위해 기도와 도움을 아끼지 않으시는 모든 분들께 감사드리며, 주님의 풍성한 은총과 사랑이 항상 함께 하길 바라며 기도합니다. 감사합니다.

Dear Friends of St. Paul’s Abbey,

As we give thanks for your kindness and help which you gave us throughout the year of 2017 and ask the blessings of Jesus Christ for you, we greet you from St. Paul’s Abbey. We hope you had a blessed Christmas and a hopeful New Year of 2018. I would like to tell you about our lives at St. Paul’s Abbey, giving thanks for God’s grace and mercy.

50th Anniversary of profession: Our American brothers, Abbot Joel, Abbot Justin and Br. Luke renewed their vows at the 50th Anniversary of profession on Saturday, September 9. Around 11 priests and 120 guests attended the ceremony. Among them were Fr. Bede, former monk of Newton who transferred to St. Martin’s Abbey in WA, Fr. Damian Milliken who works in Tanzania as a missionary and Fr. Adam of Münsterschwarzach. Abbot Elias, the President of American Cassinese Congregation, presided at the ceremony. When Abbot Elias was a college student, Abbot Joel was his teacher. After the mass, we shared gladness and gratitude at a luncheon with the guests. Ten Tanzaznian sisters from Assumption College sang the traditional Tanzanian songs of joy for the Anniversary.

Guests: Abbot Blasio came here on June 27 and the next day, he went to Washington DC to attend a meeting with South Korean President Jae In Mun at Jangjin Reservoir Battle Monument, National Museum of the Marine Corps. He was invited in honor of the humanitarian act of Br. Marinus at the Hungnam Evacuation during the Korean War. After returning from Washington D.C., he stayed with us until July 4. While Abbot Blasio was here, Abbot Primate emeritus Notker Wolf also visited us from July 3 to July 4. They planted two lilac trees in front of the stature of Jesus at the Abbey cemetery in honor of Br. Marinus on July 3. Abbot President Jeremias visited us on September 25. He looked around our newly renovated retreat house and boiler system. The next day, he presided at mass for us and then left Newton. Many other guests visited us as well.

Brothers: On June 7, Br. Bernardo Ji was assigned to Newton. He took vows on January 14, 2008 and worked in the business office at Waegwan Abbey. Now he is in charge of the kitchen and studies English. Br. John Baptist Tem Tem returned to Agbang Abbey in Togo. He came here on May 17, 2016 and worked at the Christmas tree farm. Br. Barnabas Song, our Abbey building maintenance man, went to St. Martin’s Abbey in Washington State to experience American monastic life and learn English from August 28 to November 17. He had a good time with American monks in a different atmosphere. He shared his experience with our brothers showing many photos of St. Martin’s Abbey and its brothers. I visited St. Benedict’s Priory in El Rosal, Colombia to attend the Superiors’ meeting of the American Region of our congregation from July 19 to 24. There are 5 small monasteries in North and South America which belong to St. Ottilien congregation: El Rosal, Gugue, Newton, Cuba and Schuyler. We talked about where we may go in the future and shared some information. El Rosal monastery is about 40 minutes distant by car from Bogota. Around 12 monks live there working in the retreat house, carpentry shop and farm. It was my first time in Colombia. I did not know that the Bogota area is so cool, even chilly, because of very high altitude at an average of 2,640 meters (8,660 ft) above sea level. Although I can’t speak Spanish, I could talk with some people by using both the smart-phone and body language. On the evening of Monday, September 18, Br. Matthias Yoo and I attended a meeting in Manhattan of Korean American Community leaders in honor of the visit by South Korean President Jae In Mun. I showed some pictures of Br. Marinus and Newton Monastery, briefly explaining about our community. Mr. President Mun and the First Lady told me that they want to plant 2 trees in front of our chapel in honor of Br. Marinus’ humanitarian act. The planting has been planned for May, 2018 by their representatives because they won’t have time to visit our monastery themselves.

Christmas Tree: Thanks to the help of many volunteers and good weather, we successfully sold even more Christmas trees than last year. We really appreciate the many volunteers for their good work and help. We also are thankful for the Don Bosco Knights of Columbus and the Columbiettes who made Christmas wreaths for us.

Dear Friends, in 2017, many guests visited our community in thanks for Br. Marinus. They want us to make plans to build some memorials for Br. Marinus. We also would like to do something in honor of Br. Marinus. But we still have some difficulties, especially leasing the school building. We are waiting and looking for a new tenant for the school. It is not easy to find a new tenant. Until then, we have to submit to financial difficulties. I ask you to pray for our community to solve this problem by God’s grace. We wish you a blessed Christmas and a hopeful New Year in 2018. May God bless you and your loved ones.

뉴튼 수도원을 아껴 주시는 고마우신 모든 분들게,

 

우리 한 민족의 고유 명절인 추석도 지나고 이젠 완연한 가을로 접어들고 있습니다. 수도원에 있는 밤나무의 밤송이가 입을 벌리고 고추는 빨갛게 익어 가고 있습니다. 올해도 풍성한 수확을 기대하며 주님의 은총이 여러분께 가득 깃들기를 바라며 수도원 소식을 전합니다.

I. 수도서원 50주년: 우리 뉴튼 공동체의 미국인 형제 죠엘 아빠스, 저스틴 아빠스 그리고 루가 수사가 9월 9일 토요일에 수도서원 50주년 서원 갱신과 축하식을 가졌습니다. 11시에 축하 미사를 봉헌하고 미사 후에 함께 식사를 하며 기쁨을 나누었습니다. 서원 갱신 미사는 미국 카시아노 베네딕도 연합회의 총재 아빠스인 엘리야 아빠스가 주례를 하였는데, 엘리야 아빠스는 대학생 때 죠엘 아빠스의 제자였다고 합니다. 이날 약 11명의 손님 신부들과 120여명의 축하객들이 참석하여 함께 기쁨을 나누고 축하해 주었습니다. 현재 루가 수사만 우리 수도원에서 함께 지내고 있으며, 죠엘 아빠스는 네브라스카 주 스카일러 수도원에서 그리고 저스틴 아빠스는 남미비아에 있는 베네딕도회 수녀원에서 지도 신부로 생활하고 있습니다.

II. 형제들 소식: 왜관 수도원에서 생활하던 지 석영 베르나르도 수사가 6월 7일에 뉴튼으로 와서 함께 생활하고 있습니다. 베르나르도 수사는 2008년 1월 14일에 첫 서원을 하였는데, 현재 영어를 배우며 유 마티아 부원장 수사를 도와 일을 하고 있습니다. 그리고 지난해 5월 17일에 이곳에 와서 생활하던 아프리카 토고에 있는 악방 수도원의 탬탬 수사가 개인 사정으로 8월 11일에 악방 수도원으로 돌아갔습니다.
수도원 건물 관리를 맡고 있는 송 기중 바르나바 수사는 8월 28일부터 11월 17일까지 워싱턴 주에 있는 성 마르티노 베네딕도 수도원에 가서 미국 수도생활을 체험하며 영어도 함께 배우는 시간을 가지고 있습니다.
이 오딜로 신부는 9월 21일부터 11월 9일까지 고국 휴가를 위해 한국에 가 있으며, 다른 형제들 모두 기도하고 일하라는 사부 성 베네딕도의 가르침에 따라 충실히 생활하고 있습니다.
저는 지난 7월 19일부터 7월 24일까지 콜롬비아에 있는 엘로살 베네딕도 수도원에 다녀왔습니다. 남미와 북미에 우리 오틸리아 연합회에 소속된 5개의 작은 수도원이 있는데, 이번에 수도원 원장들이 함께 모여 수도원의 나아가야할 방향과 여러 가지 안건에 대해 토의를 하였습니다. 콜롬비아에 있는 엘로살 수도원은 수도 보고타에서 약 40분 정도 떨어진 곳에 위치한 작은 수도원으로서 약 12명의 수도자들이 피정집, 농장 그리고 목공소를 운영하며 생활하고 있는 수도원입니다. 9월 18일에는 한국에서 유엔 총회에 참가하기 위해 뉴욕을 방문하신 문 재인 대통령과 함께한 동포간담회에 유 마티아 수사와 참석하였습니다. 이 자리에서 문재인 대통령과 영부인에게 마리누스 수사와 수도원에 대해 사진을 보여 드리며 간략하게 소개하기도 하였는데, 영부인은 수도원에 마리누스 수사의 업적을 기리며 나무 한 그루를 심고자하셨습니다. 시간이 촉박한 관계로 직접 수도원에 오시지는 못하고 적당한 시간에 대리 식수를 하실 예정입니다.

III. 손님: 이번 여름에도 많은 손님들이 다녀 갔는데, 특히 6월 27일에는 박 블라시오 아빠스가 워싱턴 DC 해병대 전쟁 기념 공원에 있는 장진호 전투 승전 기념식에 참석하기 위해 급하게 뉴튼을 방문하였습니다. 이 기념식에 문재인 대통령이 참석하면서 흥남 철수 때 14,000명을 구한 마리누스 수사의 업적도 기리고 감사하기 위해 박 블라시오 아빠스와 죠엘 아빠스를 함께 초청하였기 때문에 그 기념식에 참석하기 위해 뉴튼에 오셨던 것입니다. 7월 3일에는 오랫동안 우리 베네딕도 총연합회 수석 아빠스를 역임했던 노트겔 볼프 아빠스가 잠시 방문하였는데, 이날 박 블라시오 아빠스와 함께 마리누스 수사를 기념하여 미스 김 라일락 두 그루를 수도원 묘지 십자가 옆에 식수 하였습니다. 7월 4일에 블라시오 아빠스는 한국으로 돌아갔고, 노트겔 아빠스는 다음 목적지로 떠났습니다. 이밖에 서원 50주년 축하식에 참석하기 위해 많은 성직자와 수도자들이 뉴튼을 방문했습니다.

IV. 봉헌회 소식: 매월 셋째 주일 오후 2시 미사부터 저녁 식사까지 모임을 가져왔던 봉헌회원들은 9월 30일부터 10월 1일까지 1박 2일로 피정을 가졌습니다. 주님의 은총과 사랑에 감사하며 그 사랑과 은총을 이웃에게 충실히 증거 하는 삶을 다짐하며, 봉헌회원으로서의 신원과 역할에 대해 생각해 보는 시간을 가졌습니다.

V. 위령성월 연미사 안내: 우리 뉴튼 수도원에서는 매년 11월 위령성월을 맞이하여 돌아가신 이들을 위해 한 달 동안 미사를 봉헌하고 있습니다. 위령 미사를 신청하실 분들은 11월 전에 수도원에 신청하시면 돌아가신 조상들을 위해 한 달 동안 미사를 봉헌합니다. 동봉하는 봉투에 위령 미사를 신청해서 이 베르나르도 수사 앞으로 보내주시면 감사하겠습니다. 이외에 수도원에 미사를 신청하고자 하시는 분들은 언제든지 신청해 주시면 미사를 봉헌하도록 하겠습니다. 혹시 위령 미사에 대해 문의하고자 하시는 분은 이 베르나르도 수사(973-222-2728)에게 연락하시기 바랍니다.
